Introducing the Dextreme

We’re excited to announce our collaboration with Dexter Outdoors on the design of their new fillet knife, the Dextreme!

We’ve worked with Dexter on their professional foodservice cutlery, developing several successful designs for many of their knife lines over the past 18 years. This is our first project for their hunting and fishing knives arm, Dexter Outdoors.

The blade of this knife is unique, sporting Dexter’s serrated “Tiger Edge” on the back of the blade, near the tip. The Tiger Edge is useful for cutting through bone and tough scale, allowing the straight filleting edge to remain sharper, longer. What this means for ergonomics is that we designed this handle to be used upside down 10% of the time!

A primary goal was for this knife to feel comfortable for a range of hand sizes, and for the two grips: one when the filet side is being used and the other with the handle flipped upside down when using the tiger edge. The form of our handle is carefully sculpted for optimal ergonomics, and inspired by the body shapes and structures of sea creatures.

We also developed a proprietary contoured texture that follows the sleek lines of the form. Not only does the texture provide a great grip when the handle gets wet and slimy, its unique design enhances the Dexter Outdoors visual brand language.

Dive in with us as we explore key aspects of ergonomics, texture, and design language in future posts.
