Inspiration for our 2022 greeting began when we saw a cross section of an insect’s compound eye and thought about how the form could transmit light. Hexagonal structures abound in nature, as they enable cells to arrange with the most efficient spacing and use of energy. The lenses of a compound eye are just the surface of a hexagonal arrangement of cones through which light reaches the insect’s photoreceptors. Our 3D interpretation of this design plays with reversing the direction of light, with our cells illuminated through to the cones below.
