Quick-turn Works-like Prototyping
Often, product design is an evolution of something that already exists, with known functions, forms, and examples already in the marketplace. However, when the goal is invention how does one prove out concepts?
At Catalano Design, we rely on quick-turn prototypes during our first phase of work. Frequently, quick-turn prototypes provide immediate feedback that is much more insightful than sketches or concept renderings. A good quick-turn prototype is like a 3 dimensional sketch that we can test it in the real world.
Speed and economy are key when making working prototypes in an early concept stage. We use readily available materials, hack apart existing products, and avoid expensive processes, unless absolutely necessary. How it looks is secondary at this stage. The sooner we can test our ideas, the faster we can move through the design process.
The beautiful thing about this kind of prototype is what it can reveal about how our ideas works.
Shown in the video is a great example of one of our quick-turn prototypes. Using standard hardware and off-the-shelf parts, we quickly put together a model of a task chair designed to promote active sitting.
