Happy New Year

Inspiration for our New Year’s greeting came from the lodgepole pinecone, both for its unique functionality and the spirals and splines that generate the patterning of its form. Resins seal the scales of these cones tightly closed protecting the seeds inside. With exposure to the intense heat of a forest fire the resin is burned away, and the seeds are released. Using the adversity of a forest fire, nature has devised a solution for ensuring new growth. 2020 was a year of unprecedented adversity. Our hope is that it spurs new growth for all of us.

By studying the spirals and splines that generate the form of the pinecone, we created our own 3D version of the lodge pole pinecone in CAD. If you ‘d like to 3D print your own, you can download the file here. Check back as we explore the details of the design in future posts.
