Inspiration and Biomimicry
Inspiration for our New Year’s greeting came from the lodgepole pinecone. Like many forms in nature, the scales of the cone are arranged in a spiral, which allows numerous seeds to grow as closely together as possible. This array can also be observed in sunflowers and many other plants.
The spiral’s prevalence in nature might explain why we, as humans, find it so appealing. As designers, a key component of our toolkit is Biomimicry - the study and emulation of ideas found in nature in to solve human challenges. Our cone design is comprised of 2 main spirals that cut across one another to form the scales. In the animation, you can follow along with the process we used to create the cone.
